About Mijas Pueblo

 

Mijas Pueblo sits at 428 metres in the Sierra de Mijas, 30 km from both Málaga and Marbella. It’s the closest proper Andalusian white village to the coast — 30 minutes from your hotel, and completely different from anything on the beach strip below.

The village has been attracting visitors since the 1960s, when the first tourists discovered it and the locals started offering donkey rides through the cobbled streets. The burro taxis are still running. The architecture is the same it’s always been — whitewashed houses, blue flowerpots, geraniums on every balcony. On a clear day you can see Morocco from the viewpoints above the village.

Most visitors do Mijas as a half-day — 3–4 hours in the village is enough to see everything properly and have a coffee or a tapas lunch. It works particularly well as a morning tour before an afternoon on the beach, or as a standalone excursion for cruise passengers who want a village experience without a long drive.

 

 

What to See in Mijas Pueblo

 

🏟️ The Square Bullring

 

 

Built in 1900 on the site of the former castle, Mijas has the only square bullring in Spain. Every other bullring in the country — and in Latin America — is circular or oval. The Mijas one is rectangular. Entry is €4 and includes a small museum. The terrace gives good views over the village rooftops and the surrounding hills.

 

🫏 Burro Taxis

 

The burro taxis have been running since the 1960s when early tourists requested donkey rides and the idea stuck. They’re near the tourist office at the village entrance. A short round trip costs around €15. The donkeys are inspected regularly by Spanish animal-welfare authorities. You don’t have to take a ride — photos are usually free if you ask politely — but children find them memorable.

 

🌄 Mirador del Compás — views to Africa

 

The main viewpoint above the village has a compass tile set into the floor pointing to cities across Europe and Africa. On a clear day the African coast — Tangier, Tétouan — is visible across the Strait of Gibraltar. The view west along the Costa del Sol towards Marbella is the best coastal panorama in the area. No entry fee.

 

⛪ Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña

 

A tiny chapel carved directly into the rock face in 1586. The local legend: two children were led by a dove to a spot in the cliff where a statue of the Virgin Mary had been hidden for 500 years. The chapel is free to enter — walk through to the sacristy and exit via a back terrace with more sea views. 15 minutes, and genuinely unusual.

 

🛍️ Old Town Streets

 

The cobbled streets around the central square have the highest density of quality artisan shops on the western Costa del Sol — ceramics, leather goods, local honey, handmade jewellery. Not souvenir tat; actual craft work. The streets themselves — white walls, bright flowers, terracotta pots — are the attraction as much as any specific sight.
