Nerja is 55 km east of Málaga — 50 minutes by car. Most visitors on the Costa del Sol know it exists and mean to go. Few make it without a car, because the public bus takes 90 minutes and you’d need it twice. This tour covers three distinct things in a single efficient day:
None of these requires more than 60–90 minutes. Together they make a complete and varied day without any section feeling rushed.
The Cuevas de Nerja were discovered in 1959 by five local boys who followed bats into a hole in the hillside. Inside they found a cave system containing Stone Age paintings estimated at 40,000 years old — among the oldest in Spain. The main chamber, the Sala del Cataclismo, is 100 metres long, 60 metres wide, and 40 metres high. The central stalagmite column at 32 metres holds a Guinness World Record as the world’s largest.
The temperature inside is a constant 18°C regardless of the season — pleasantly cool in summer, noticeably warmer than outside in winter. The visit follows a marked route through the main chambers and takes approximately 45 minutes at a relaxed pace. Your Caves tickets are included in the tour price.
The Balcón de Europa is a wide clifftop promenade at the centre of Nerja town, built on the site of a former castle. Alfonso XII visited in 1884 after a series of earthquakes devastated the town and reportedly called the view the balcony of Europe — the name has stuck since. The views from the balcony are straight out to sea, with rocky coves and beaches visible on both sides.
The streets around the Balcón are the heart of the old town — good cafés, local restaurants, small shops. After the caves (which work best in the morning when they’re less crowded), Nerja town is the natural next stop for a coffee or a walk along the clifftop.

Experience the beauty of Frigiliana’s white-washed streets on a private day trip with Costa Excursions.
Frigiliana is 6 km from Nerja up into the Sierra de Almijara — 10 minutes by car. The lower village is modern. The upper Moorish quarter (the Barrio Alto) is the reason people come: narrow whitewashed lanes, houses with terracotta pots and trailing geraniums, hand-painted ceramic tile murals built into the walls depicting the 1569 Moorish revolt against the Spanish Crown. It’s one of the most intact Moorish urban layouts in Andalusia.
The views from the upper village — down over the lower town, across the Axarquía hills, and to the sea — are some of the best on the eastern Costa del Sol. The village has good small restaurants for lunch and a handful of quality artisan shops. It’s small enough to see properly in 60–90 minutes.

We had a wonderful day visiting Nerja and Frigiliana with Costa Excursions. The whole trip was very well organized, with comfortable private transport and a relaxed schedule. Nerja was beautiful, especially the Balcón de Europa and the coastal views, and Frigiliana was absolutely charming with its whitewashed streets, flowers, and mountain scenery. It was the perfect day trip from the Costa del Sol.

Yes — this is one of our most family-friendly tours. Children find the caves genuinely impressive (the scale and formations are striking regardless of age), the Balcón de Europa has easy walking, and Frigiliana’s colourful streets and tile murals are engaging for all ages. No significant fitness requirements.

Moderate. The caves involve walking on an uneven path with some stairs (around 20–30 minutes of active walking inside). Frigiliana’s Moorish quarter is steep and cobbled — sturdy shoes are important. No extreme distances but not suitable for guests who cannot manage stairs or uneven ground.
Yes — lunch isn’t included but there are good options in both locations. Frigiliana has several small restaurants in the upper village that we recommend. If you want a longer lunch stop, we simply adjust the pace — it’s a private tour.
Yes. Want more time in the caves? More time in Frigiliana? Prefer to skip the caves and spend longer in Nerja town? It’s a private tour — we adapt to what works for your group.
April–June and September–October are ideal — comfortable temperatures, manageable crowds. July and August are busy and hot (30°C+) but the caves stay cool at 18°C year-round. The tour runs year-round.
