Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory the size of a small town, perched on a 426-metre limestone rock at the southern tip of Spain. It has wild monkeys, 18th-century tunnels carved into the rock during a military siege, a natural cave large enough to host concerts, and a runway you have to cross on foot to get in. It’s 90 km from Marbella and 130 km from Málaga — a full day that feels completely different from anything else on the Costa del Sol.
We pick you up at your hotel and drive along the coast to Gibraltar, where a local guide meets you at the border for the Rock tour. The day covers the main Upper Rock highlights, free time in the city centre, and a relaxed drive back. You don’t need to worry about parking, border logistics, or navigating between the sights — we handle all of that.
The Rock rises 426 metres above sea level and is visible from 50 km away on a clear day. From the top, you can see the Bay of Algeciras, the Spanish coast to the east and west, the Strait of Gibraltar, and — on clear days — the Rif Mountains of Morocco about 14 km across the water. Your local guide covers the history, the military significance, and the practical route between the main viewpoints.
Around 300 Barbary macaques live freely on the Upper Rock — Europe’s only wild monkey population. They have no fear of people and will sit on your shoulder, grab your phone, or attempt to open your bag if given the chance. Do not feed them. Hold your belongings firmly near the monkey areas. Your guide will manage this so the experience is enjoyable rather than chaotic. Children find them unforgettable.
A natural limestone cave system halfway up the Rock with a main chamber large enough to have been converted into an auditorium — it hosts concerts and theatrical performances. The stalactite and stalagmite formations have been growing for millions of years. The atmospheric lighting makes it one of the more photogenic stops of the day.
During the Great Siege of 1779–1783, British soldiers carved a network of tunnels into the Rock to position artillery that could fire on Spanish and French forces below. The tunnels were extended significantly during World War II when Gibraltar served as a critical Allied base. The original 18th-century sections are open to visitors with the cannon emplacements intact. More interesting than they sound — the engineering is remarkable given the tools available at the time.
The southernmost tip of Gibraltar — a lighthouse at the end of the Rock with Africa directly opposite across the Strait. On a clear day, the distance to Morocco is visibly narrow: 14 km. The Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque, one of the largest in Western Europe, is immediately adjacent. A good place to stop and take in the geography before heading back into town.
Gibraltar’s airport has one runway, and it crosses the main road between Spain and Gibraltar. When a plane is due, traffic lights stop all vehicles and pedestrians while the aircraft uses the road. You will almost certainly cross the runway on foot during the day. It surprises everyone the first time.
After the Rock tour, you have free time on Main Street — the main pedestrian shopping area with duty-free electronics, perfumes, spirits, and branded goods alongside British pubs, fish and chip shops, and Spanish-style tapas bars. Gibraltar has no VAT, so prices are lower than the Spanish mainland. A good time for lunch, a pint, or to spend GIP (Gibraltar pounds) before crossing back — they’re not accepted in Spain, so pay by card wherever possible.

This is a private full-day tour priced per group, not per person. The vehicle, guide, and itinerary are reserved exclusively for your party.

For context: a typical cruise line shore excursion to Gibraltar costs €100–€150 per person on a shared coach. At 4 people, our private tour works out at €250 per person — for a private vehicle, no group, no fixed schedule, and a local guide rather than a coach commentary.
Since 15 July 2026, no passport or ID check is required to cross the land border between Spain and Gibraltar — the crossing is now open, with no routine formalities for pedestrians or vehicles. This applies specifically to the land crossing, which is how every Costa Excursions Gibraltar tour travels.
We still recommend bringing a passport as a simple precaution — the new system is recent, and it’s useful to have if your day includes anything beyond the standard land crossing. But you no longer need to worry about document checks holding up the day. See our full border update for more detail on what changed.
Gibraltar pound (GIP) change is not accepted in Spain. Pay by card wherever possible to avoid ending up with unusable currency.
Gibraltar is a full-day excursion from Málaga port — 1h 45 each way plus the border. This means you need a minimum of 9–10 hours in port to do it safely. If your ship docks at 8 AM and departs at 8 PM, it works. If departure is earlier, it doesn’t.
Before booking, WhatsApp us with your ship name, arrival time, and departure time. We’ll confirm whether the timing is realistic before you commit. We’ve been running cruise shore excursions since 2015 and have never had a guest miss their ship.

We booked a private day trip to Gibraltar. There were 6 of us ranging in age from 11 – 78. Peter was very helpful answering my many questions. Thomas picked us up at our hotel in Marbella and spent the day with us. The tour was fantastic, enjoyed by all! We highly recommend this company.

The day trip from Malaga to Gibraltar was good. We got to spend time at the Nature Reserve, and see St Michael’s Cave. It was a good opportunity to see something different.

No — since 15 July 2026, routine passport checks were removed from the land border between Spain and Gibraltar, and crossing by car or on foot no longer requires any document check. We still recommend carrying a passport as a simple precaution, since the new system is recent. This applies to the land crossing used on all our tours; travellers flying directly into Gibraltar Airport still go through full passport control there.
The full day runs 6–7 hours. Gibraltar is 130 km from Málaga (1h 45 each way) and 90 km from Marbella (1h 15 each way). Since the July 2026 border changes, crossing time is faster and more predictable than before. We depart at 9:00 AM and return around 4:00 PM.
The tour is priced per group, not per person: 2 people €890, 3 people €950, 4 people €999, 5 people €1,050, 6 people €1,099, 7 people €1,150. For 8 or more people, contact us for a quote. At 4+ passengers, the per-person cost is comparable to or lower than cruise line group excursions — but entirely private.
They’re not aggressive but they are fast, persistent, and experienced at taking things from visitors. Don’t feed them, don’t hold out food near them, and secure your phone, sunglasses, and any loose items. Your guide will manage the encounter. Children find them brilliant — just keep a firm hold on bags and hats.
Yes — St. Michael’s Cave is included as part of the Rock tour itinerary, along with the Great Siege Tunnels, Europa Point, Barbary macaques area, and the main panoramic viewpoints.
Yes — Gibraltar works particularly well for families. The monkeys are a guaranteed hit with children, the cave and tunnels are engaging, the runway crossing is surprising and memorable, and the duty-free shopping keeps adults occupied. No significant walking challenges — the Rock tour uses a minibus between most stops.
Only if your ship gives you enough time — Gibraltar is a full-day excursion (9–10 hours minimum in port) from Málaga port. Contact us before booking with your ship name, arrival time, and departure time. We’ll confirm whether it’s feasible. We’ve never had a guest miss their ship in 10+ years of operation.
Gibraltar uses the Gibraltar pound (GIP), pegged 1:1 to the British pound. Euros are widely accepted in shops and restaurants but change is given in GIP, which can’t be used back in Spain. Pay by card wherever possible to avoid leftover Gibraltar currency.
Routine passport and customs checks at the land border were removed as of 15 July 2026, under a new UK-Spain-EU treaty. Crossing by car or on foot is now open, with no document checks and no queues at the former checkpoint. Passport control has shifted to Gibraltar’s airport and port for those arriving by air or sea. See our full guide to the change.
Within practical limits, yes. This is a private tour so we can adjust the pace, spend more time at specific stops, or skip anything that doesn’t interest you. The Rock tour sequence is largely determined by the local Gibraltar guide who knows the most efficient route — but we’re flexible within that.
We’ve been running private day tours and shore excursions on the Costa del Sol since 2015. Small, local, and personal — every booking is direct with us, your transport is always private, and you’re never placed on a coach for the journey from the Costa del Sol. 192 five-star TripAdvisor reviews from guests across Europe and the US.
