What to See in Málaga

 

Alcazaba and Castillo de Gibralfaro

The Alcazaba is an 11th-century Moorish fortress built by the Hammudid dynasty — the most complete surviving Moorish fortress in Spain after the Alhambra. Double-walled, with ascending patios, gardens, and towers. From the top, the views over the port and city are the best you’ll get without continuing up to Gibralfaro castle above it. The two together take about 2 hours and cost €5.50 combined. Free on Sundays.

 

Roman Theatre

A 1st-century BC Roman theatre discovered in 1951, buried under centuries of later construction. Free to enter. Takes 30 minutes. Sits directly at the foot of the Alcazaba — the layering of Roman, Moorish, and Christian architecture in that single view is the most efficient summary of Málaga’s 3,000-year history you’ll find anywhere in the city.

 

Picasso Museum

Picasso was born at Plaza de la Merced 15 in 1881. The main museum is in the Buenavista Palace 500 metres away — 285 works across all his periods in a 16th-century Renaissance palace with Moorish remains in the basement. €12 entry; free on Sunday evenings after 5 PM (limited places). Allow 1.5–2 hours.

 

Mercado de Atarazanas

Málaga’s central food market in a 14th-century Moorish building with a spectacular stained-glass window. Fresh fish, jamón, cheese, olives, spices — and tapas bars inside the market where you eat what’s being sold a few metres away. Arrive by noon. Closes around 3 PM.

 

Antigua Casa de Guardia

Open since 1840 on the Alameda Principal. No seats — you stand at a sloped wooden bar lined with enormous wine barrels. Orders chalked onto the wood counter. Tap a coin on the bar to get attention. Try the Seco Añejo or any of the sweet Málaga wines. Spend €5–8, stay 20 minutes. One of the genuinely unrepeatable experiences in the city.

 

Pedregalejo and El Palo — espetos country

The beach neighborhoods 15 minutes east of the centre by taxi or bus #11. Lined with family-run chiringuitos (beachfront restaurants) where espetos de sardinas — sardines threaded on cane skewers and grilled over driftwood fires — are the main event. The most authentic Málaga food experience you can have. Best from May to October.

What to Eat in Málaga

 

Málaga has its own food culture distinct from the rest of Andalusia. The dishes to order:

 

• Espetos de sardinas — the signature dish. Sardines grilled on cane skewers over driftwood fires. Only at Pedregalejo and El Palo beach restaurants.
• Pescaíto frito — mixed fried fish in light batter. Ordered at almost every tapas bar in the city.
• Ajoblanco — cold almond and garlic soup, Málaga’s answer to gazpacho.
• Berenjenas con miel de caña — fried aubergines with cane molasses. A Málaga speciality.
• Vino dulce de Málaga — the local sweet wine from Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel grapes. Try it at Antigua Casa de Guardia.
