Calle Larios lights and shows
Calle Larios is the elegant pedestrian street that runs from Plaza de la Constitución down to the Alameda, and it is the centre of Málaga’s Christmas. The city plans to switch on the lights on Friday 27 November 2026. The switch-on time had not been announced when we checked. The council has said there will be changes to the Larios decoration compared with last year, but has not detailed them.
Last year’s light-and-music show on Calle Larios ran three times each evening (18:30, 20:30 and 22:00). The 2026 schedule had not been published, so do not plan around those times yet.
When to go: Larios is busiest between 19:00 and 21:00 on weekends and in the days before Christmas. If you want space to take photos, go on a weekday, or arrive before the first show and stay for the second. The street is short and flat, so it works for older visitors and for pushchairs, but expect to move slowly at peak times.
Cathedral projections and other lights
- Cathedral and Larios light-and-sound: planned from 27 November 2026 to 4 January 2027, in the evening. Exact showtimes are pending.
- La Concepción Botanical Garden: a ticketed Christmas light trail, “Navidad en el Jardín de Oz”, from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Tickets are on sale; check prices and access on the garden’s official site. It is a few kilometres north of the centre, so plan transport and book in advance for weekends.
- Alameda Principal and Paseo del Parque: lit every year and easy to include on a walk between Larios and the port. The Paseo del Parque side is the usual spot for the Christmas market; the 2026 dates had not been announced.
Nativity scenes and Christmas traditions
Málaga takes its belenes (nativity scenes) seriously. The city runs a public nativity scene, and many churches, associations and shops put up their own. The 2026 locations and opening hours for the city’s scenes had not been published when we checked, so look for the council’s list once it comes out.
Two traditions are worth knowing before you go:
- Zambombas: informal carol gatherings with flamenco-style songs, held in squares in the centre in December. Dates change each year; check the council’s programme.
- Roscón de Reyes: the ring-shaped cake eaten around 6 January, sold in every bakery from late December. Polvorones and mantecados, crumbly Christmas sweets, are on sale from November.
New Year’s Eve and the Three Kings
- New Year’s Eve: the public celebration is at Plaza de la Constitución on 31 December 2026. The programme is pending. Many restaurants offer special menus and fill up early, so book ahead.
- Three Kings parade: planned for 5 January 2027. Start time and route had not been announced. Arrive early and avoid standing next to the start; the Kings’ sweets and the crowd make the first stretch very busy.
- 6 January: Wednesday 6 January 2027 is a public holiday. Many shops are closed, while restaurants and cafes in the centre stay open.
Getting there from Marbella, Mijas and the coast
Parking in the centre is hard on the busiest nights. If you are staying along the coast, the simplest ways are the commuter train to Málaga from Fuengirola and the stations on the way, a taxi, or a private transfer back after the show. If you are driving, use an underground car park near the port and walk up to Larios; avoid parking on the street around the Alameda in the evening.
Wear comfortable shoes and a light jacket. Winter evenings in Málaga are mild compared with northern Europe but can feel cool by the sea.
A simple evening plan
- 17:30: arrive in the centre and walk along the Alameda and Paseo del Parque.
- 18:30: head up to Calle Larios and secure a spot before the first show (check the times first).
- Early dinner: tapas in the old town; book in advance at weekends.
- After dinner: the Cathedral projection and a slow walk back through the lit streets.
Beyond the city: a private day trip over the holidays
Christmas week is a quiet, mild time to see the places that are crowded in summer. A private day trip gives you one comfortable day away from the city crowds, with pickup at your hotel:
- Private day trip to Ronda, with the Puente Nuevo and old town without the summer queues.
- Alhambra and Granada private tour, a long day but one of the best in winter.
- Nerja and Frigiliana, white villages and sea views.
