The short answer: stay in Málaga city if it is your first visit and you do not want to rent a car. Stay in Marbella if beaches, resorts and a polished seaside atmosphere matter most. Stay in Mijas if you want calm, views and a village pace. All three are close enough to join the same private day trips: we collect you at your hotel and bring you back, so your base decides your evenings far more than it decides your days.
The Costa del Sol is not one place. It is a 150 km strip of very different towns, and choosing the wrong base is the most common planning mistake we see from first-time visitors. This guide compares the three bases our guests ask about most, in plain terms, with real distances and real prices.
We are Peter Fischer and Thomas Liedtke, and we have run private day tours from Mijas since 2015. We collect guests every week from hotels in Málaga, Marbella and Mijas, so this comes from daily practice, not from a brochure. Where a choice is a matter of taste, we say so.
Table of Contents
At a glance: Málaga vs Marbella vs Mijas
| Base | Best for | Car needed? | Feel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Málaga city | Culture, food, first-timers, no car | Not needed: old town is walkable, trains and airport links | City break feel, year-round life |
| Marbella | Beaches, resorts, golf, a relaxed holiday | Helpful for exploring, not needed with private tours | Resort and old-town mix, quieter in the evening |
| Mijas | Couples, calm, views, slow travel | Needed, or use private tours | Village in the hills (Pueblo) or beach strip (Costa) |
Why your base matters less than you think (for day trips)
Because our trips are private and door-to-door, you do not have to get yourself to a meeting point, a bus station or a car rental desk. The driver comes to you. What changes with your base is the length of the drive, not the quality of the day. These are the real distances:
| Destination | From Málaga | From Marbella |
|---|---|---|
| Ronda | 100 km · 1h20–1h30 | 65 km · 1 hour |
| Nerja & Frigiliana | 55 km · 50 min | 120 km · 1h30 |
| Caminito del Rey | 60 km · 1 hour | 90 km · 1h20 |
| Granada | 158 km · 1h30 | 185 km · 2 hours |
| Gibraltar | 130 km · 1h45 | 90 km · 1h15 |
| Mijas Pueblo | 30 km · 30 min | 30 km · 30 min |
In short, Marbella is closer to Ronda and Gibraltar, and Málaga is closer to Nerja, the Caminito del Rey and Granada. Mijas sits between the two and is the nearest to the airport side of the coast. If one specific trip is the reason you are coming, let that trip choose your base.
Staying in Málaga city
Málaga is the only one of the three that works as a real city. The historic centre, the Alcazaba, the Roman Theatre, the Cathedral, the port and a large number of restaurants and tapas bars are within a short walk of each other. You can arrive, leave the suitcase and eat well within an hour, without needing a car.
Who it suits
First-time visitors, couples, solo travellers, people who like to eat out in the evening, and anyone arriving or leaving by plane or train. It is also the best base for Granada, because the drive is shorter and a day trip stays comfortable.
What to know
It is a working city, so it is busier and noisier than a resort, and the beaches in the city are urban beaches rather than the postcard kind. If a sunbed and a quiet sea are your priority, look at Marbella or the coast further along.
Day trips from Málaga
Everything on our list works from here. Ronda is a comfortable day (private Ronda day trip, 7 hours, from €600 for 2 people), and the combination of a winery and Ronda is a very popular choice (Ronda Winery & Tapas, 8 hours, tasting included, from €600). If you only want to see the city itself, our private Málaga walking tour is a flat €250 for 2 to 6 people, about 3 hours.
Staying in Marbella
Marbella is a resort town with a historic old town, a long promenade, marinas and a wide choice of beach clubs and golf courses. It is polished, comfortable and easy, and it is where many holiday visitors want to be.
Who it suits
Families who want beach time, couples on a relaxed holiday, golfers and anyone who wants the feeling of a resort with a pleasant old town for the evening. If you will spend most days by the sea and add one or two excursions, Marbella is a very good choice.
What to know
It has no train, so you rely on buses, taxis or a car to move around the coast. Prices for hotels and dining are generally higher in peak season. The evenings are quieter and more resort-like than in Málaga.
Day trips from Marbella
This is the best base for Ronda, about 65 km and 1 hour each way, and a good one for Gibraltar, about 1h15. We have written a separate guide to the best day trips from Marbella, and one on Ronda from Marbella. Granada is possible but it is a long day from here (185 km), so many guests prefer to stay a night in Granada or choose another trip.

Discover the picturesque fountain in Mijas, a highlight of this beautiful Andalusian village on a day trip.
Staying in Mijas
Mijas has two faces. Mijas Pueblo is the white village on the hill with narrow streets, views over the coast and a calm evening. Mijas Costa is the beach strip below, with resorts and golf. Both are in the middle of the coast, close to the airport side, and it is where we are based.
Who it suits
Couples and slow travellers who want views and quiet in the village, or families who want a beach resort that is not as busy as the large towns.
What to know
You will want transport. Public connections to other parts of the region are limited, so a car or private tours are the practical way to see more than the village and the beach. If you want to stay in the village and explore it properly, our private Mijas day trip starts at €500 for 2 people.
Other bases worth a mention
Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola are busier, more affordable beach towns near the airport, with a train line along the coast. They suit people who want sun, a lively seafront and good value, and they work for day trips in the same way as the bases above, because we collect you at your hotel.
Getting there from Málaga airport
Málaga airport is the gateway for all three bases. Málaga city is the closest, a short ride from the airport by taxi, bus or train. Mijas Costa is also near the airport side of the coast. Marbella is farther along the motorway, roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road depending on traffic, and it has no train, so most guests arrive by taxi, transfer or rental car. If you land late or with children, the shorter transfer to Málaga or Mijas can make the first night much easier.
A simple four-day plan from any base
If you have four days and want a balance of sights and rest, this works whichever base you choose:
- Day 1: arrive, settle in and walk the old town or promenade. Keep it easy.
- Day 2: a private day trip to Ronda or the Ronda Winery & Tapas tour, our two most popular days.
- Day 3: a free day by the sea, or the Málaga walking tour if you are staying in the city.
- Day 4: a second day trip: Nerja and Frigiliana for caves and a white village, or Granada if you booked the Alhambra at least 2 months ahead.
Spacing a day trip between two relaxed days keeps the holiday enjoyable, and it avoids the tired, rushed feeling of packing everything into consecutive days.
How to choose in one minute
- You want to see the most with the least planning: Málaga.
- You want a beach holiday with one or two excursions: Marbella.
- You want calm and views: Mijas Pueblo.
- Ronda is your top priority: Marbella, or Málaga if you also want the city.
- Granada and the Alhambra are a priority: Málaga.
- You are arriving by cruise ship: Málaga port is the starting point, and we collect you at the terminal.
Five mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a base to save money and losing hours in transport. A cheaper room 40 minutes away costs you time every day.
- Planning too many bases. For a week, two bases at most. Moving every night wastes the holiday.
- Assuming everything is close. Granada from Marbella is 185 km, so it is a long day.
- Waiting to book tickets. Alhambra tickets must be secured at least 2 months ahead, and the Caminito del Rey often sells out 6 to 12 weeks ahead in high season.
- Booking per-person group trips for a family. Our private prices are per group of 2 to 7, which is often better value for 4 or more people.
What a private day trip costs (per group, not per person)
| Tour | 2 people | 7 people |
|---|---|---|
| Ronda | €600 | €790 |
| Ronda Winery & Tapas | €600 | €925 |
| Nerja & Frigiliana | €600 | €790 |
| Granada & Alhambra | €800 | €1,000 |
| Gibraltar | €890 | €1,150 |
| Caminito del Rey | €450 | €750 |
| Mijas | €500 | €720 |
| Málaga walking tour | €250 (flat, 2 to 6 people) | €250 |
Transport, fuel, tolls and parking are included. Entry tickets are included on some tours, and the details are on each tour page.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place to stay on the Costa del Sol for a first visit?
For most first-time visitors without a rental car, Málaga city is the easiest base: it has the airport connection, trains, the old town, restaurants and sights within walking distance. Choose Marbella if you want beaches, resort hotels and a more polished seaside atmosphere, and Mijas if you want a quieter, village-style stay.
Is it better to stay in Málaga or Marbella?
Málaga is better for culture, food and getting around without a car. Marbella is better for beach time, golf and a relaxed resort feel. Both work for day trips: Ronda is about 1h20 from Málaga and about 1 hour from Marbella, while Granada is closer to Málaga (158 km vs 185 km).
Do I need a rental car on the Costa del Sol?
Not if you stay in Málaga city and book private day trips, because the hotel pickup replaces the car. If you stay in Marbella or Mijas and want to explore on your own, public transport is limited for places like Ronda, so a car or a private tour is the practical option.
Which base is best for day trips to Ronda?
Marbella is the closest of the big bases to Ronda, at about 65 km and 1 hour. From Málaga it is about 100 km and 1h20 to 1h30. Both are comfortable for a private day trip and we collect you at your hotel in either place.
Which base is best for Granada and the Alhambra?
Málaga. Granada is 158 km and about 1h30 by car from Málaga, against 185 km and about 2 hours from Marbella. Alhambra tickets must be secured at least 2 months ahead, whichever base you choose.
Is Mijas a good place to stay?
Yes, if you want calm, views and a village feel. Mijas Pueblo is 30 km and about 30 minutes from Málaga. It is a good fit for couples and slow travellers, but you will want transport or tours for the rest of the region.
Can you pick us up from any hotel on the Costa del Sol?
Yes. We collect guests directly at their hotel, apartment or cruise terminal in Málaga, Marbella, Mijas and along the Costa del Sol. Tell us where you are staying when you book.
How many days should I plan on the Costa del Sol?
Three to four days gives you Málaga plus one or two day trips. A week lets you add a mountain or white-village day, a wine day and a slower day on the coast.
