Why Mijas is a good base for day trips
Mijas sits on the coast between Málaga and Marbella, with the mountains behind it. That position matters: the big inland excursions to Ronda and the Caminito are no further than from Málaga, and Gibraltar is not much further than from Marbella. Staying here you avoid the crowds of the busiest resort strips, usually pay less, and still reach almost every highlight in a morning’s drive.
It also means you have three different bases to choose from, which is useful when you are comparing where to stay. For a full comparison with Málaga and Marbella, see our guide to where to stay on the Costa del Sol.
The three Mijas
| Area | What it is like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Mijas Pueblo | The white village on the mountainside, with viewpoints and narrow streets | Atmosphere, views and quieter evenings |
| La Cala de Mijas | A coastal village with a beach promenade | Beach holidays with a village feel |
| Mijas Costa | The coastline of urbanisations, golf resorts and beaches, such as Calahonda and Riviera del Sol | Golf, apartments and family resort stays |

How a door-to-door private tour works from Mijas
- You tell us where you are staying. A hotel, villa, apartment or golf resort anywhere in the Mijas area works.
- We agree the pickup time. Longer trips such as Granada and Gibraltar start earlier. In summer we aim for an early start to avoid the heat.
- A driver-guide collects you in a private air-conditioned vehicle, with fuel and tolls included.
- You see the destination at your own pace, with a flexible plan rather than a fixed coach schedule.
- You are brought back to the same door.
That is the practical difference from a group excursion: no meeting point, no waiting for a coach party and no public transport. Our How our private tours work page explains the details.

The best day trips from Mijas, one by one
Ronda
Ronda is the classic first excursion from Mijas: a mountain town split by a gorge and crossed by the Puente Nuevo, about 80 km and an hour twenty away. The private trip covers the bridge, the old town and the bullring, and the price includes the bullring entry of about €10. It is comfortable for mixed ages, with mostly short walks. From €600 for 2 people. See the private Ronda tour, our guide to the Ronda day trip and the story of the Puente Nuevo.
Nerja and Frigiliana
This is the gentlest big day out: the Nerja Caves, the Balcón de Europa clifftop promenade in Nerja and the whitewashed Moorish quarter of Frigiliana. It is a good choice for couples, families and anyone who wants coast and village in one day. The Nerja Caves entrance is included. From €600 for 2 people. See the private Nerja and Frigiliana trip and our Nerja and Frigiliana day trip guide.
Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a full day, but it feels like a different country: the Rock, the wild Barbary macaques, St Michael’s Cave and the Great Siege Tunnels, then free time on Main Street. Routine passport checks at the land border ended on 15 July 2026, though we still recommend carrying your passport. From €890 for 2 people. See the private Gibraltar day trip, our guide to things to do in Gibraltar and what changed at the Gibraltar border.
Caminito del Rey
The Caminito is the active choice: a 7.7 km walk with 2.9 km of walkway about 100 metres above the Gaitanes gorge. The minimum age is 8, it is not for anyone with a serious fear of heights, and tickets sell out many weeks ahead, so decide early. Our trip includes the entrance ticket. From €450 for 2 people. See the private Caminito del Rey tour and our Caminito del Rey visitor guide.
Granada and the Alhambra
Granada is the longest of the main trips, about 150 km and roughly an hour fifty to two hours each way, so it is a full day with an early start. The Alhambra ticket is included in our private trip, and because tickets must be secured at least two months ahead, you should book the date early. From €800 for 2 people. See the private Granada and Alhambra trip and our Alhambra tickets guide.
Mijas Pueblo, the easy half day
If you want a gentle day, start at home. Mijas Pueblo has the Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña, built into the rock, the square bullring, the Mirador del Compás and cobbled streets with craft shops. It is the shortest and easiest trip on the list and suits families and seniors. From €500 for 2 people. See the private Mijas Pueblo trip and our Mijas Pueblo guide.
What it costs: private prices per group
| Day trip | 2 people | 7 people |
|---|---|---|
| Caminito del Rey | €450 | €850 |
| Mijas Pueblo | €500 | €720 |
| Ronda | €600 | €890 |
| Nerja & Frigiliana | €600 | €950 |
| Granada & the Alhambra | €800 | €1,120 |
| Gibraltar | €890 | €1,150 |
The price is for the whole group, so the cost per person falls as the group grows: Ronda, for example, is €300 per person for 2 and about €127 for 7. Each tour page shows the full price for every group size from 2 to 7. For larger groups, ask us for a quote.

Closest attractions to Mijas
Not every outing needs a long drive. Within roughly half an hour you can reach Mijas Pueblo itself, Marbella Old Town (about 25 km) and Málaga city (about 25 to 30 km). For Málaga we run a private walking tour at a flat €250 for 2 to 6 people, lasting about three hours, which is a good use of a half day.
Planning a week in Mijas
A simple pattern works well for a week-long stay:
- Day 1: arrive and relax, or take the easy Mijas Pueblo half day.
- Day 2: Ronda.
- Day 3: rest, beach or Marbella Old Town.
- Day 4: Nerja and Frigiliana.
- Day 5: Gibraltar or Granada, depending on your interests.
- Day 6: the Caminito del Rey, if you are active and tickets are secured.
Alternate big days with easy ones, and book Granada and the Caminito first because they depend on tickets. In July and August choose the earliest starts, because the inland trips are hot in the middle of the day.
