A day trip from Malaga to Ronda is one of the most rewarding excursions you can take on the Costa del Sol. In roughly 90 minutes you leave the coast behind and climb 800 metres into the Serranía de Ronda, where one of Andalusia’s most dramatic towns sits astride a 100-metre gorge. Puente Nuevo, the oldest bullring in Spain, a 10th-century Arab bathhouse, more than 20 wineries and some of the best Rabo de Toro you’ll ever eat — all in one day. This guide is written by the team at Costa Excursions, a local private tour operator based in Mijas that drives the Malaga–Ronda route several times every week.

Day Trip from Malaga to Ronda: Why It’s Worth Going
The city of Malaga has a lot to offer — museums, monuments, beaches and a world-class gastronomic scene. But once you’ve got a sense of the city, the best thing you can do is head inland. A day trip from Malaga to Ronda takes you from coast to mountain in 90 minutes and delivers one of the most dramatic townscapes in Spain.
Ronda is the largest and most visited of Andalusia’s pueblos blancos (white villages), perched on a sheer cliff cut in two by El Tajo gorge, which the Guadalevín river has carved over millennia. Three stone bridges stitch the two halves together — one Roman, one Moorish and the iconic Puente Nuevo, completed in 1793.
Ronda was also the birthplace of modern bullfighting. The Romero dynasty codified the rules here in the 18th century, and the Real Maestranza bullring — opened in 1785 — is the oldest in Spain still in use. Writers have long been obsessed with the place: Hemingway set parts of For Whom the Bell Tolls here, and Orson Welles asked for his ashes to be buried on a friend’s estate just outside town.

| Option | Time | Approx. cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private tour with guide | 1h 30 each way | €600 per group (up to 6 pax) | Hassle-free, door-to-door, insider commentary |
| Rental car | 1h 30 each way | €40–80/day + fuel + parking | Independent travellers happy with mountain driving |

| Train (Renfe) | 2h – 2h 30 each way | €15–30 each way | Scenic ride from Malaga María Zambrano |
Most visitors underestimate how much the drive itself is part of the experience. The A-357 and A-367 wind through olive groves, whitewashed villages like Ardales and El Burgo, and then climb through cork oak forests as you approach Ronda, which sits at 800 m above sea level. We always build in a photo stop on the way up.
Things to Do in Ronda in One Day
Here is the itinerary we run on our private day tour from Malaga or Marbella to Ronda. It covers the essentials without rushing and works whether you’re arriving by car, cruise or on a guided tour.
1. Puente Nuevo (New Bridge)
Puente Nuevo, Ronda
The single most photographed spot in Ronda, and rightly so. The Puente Nuevo spans the 100-metre-deep El Tajo gorge and connects the old Moorish town (La Ciudad) with the newer quarter (El Mercadillo). Construction began in 1759 and took 34 years — the original single-arch bridge collapsed six years after completion, so the current three-arch structure was built by architect José Martín de Aldehuela, who also designed the bullring.
Pro tip: the best views aren’t from the bridge itself but from two spots below it. Walk down the signposted path on the La Ciudad side for a head-on view of the bridge with the waterfall beneath. Keep hold of your camera — locals joke that hundreds are dropped into the gorge every year.
2. Real Maestranza Bullring
Real Maestranza Bullring, Ronda
The oldest bullring in Spain and one of the prettiest. Built in 1785, it holds 5,000 spectators and is only used once a year, for the Feria de Pedro Romero in early September, when matadors still fight in 18th-century costume.
- Entry: €9 (or €10 with audio guide)
- Hours: Jan–Feb 10:00–18:00 · Mar 10:00–19:00 · Apr–Sep 10:00–20:00 · Oct 10:00–19:00 · Nov–Dec 10:00–18:00
- Highlight: the on-site museum covers the Romero dynasty, historic costumes and the famous rejoneadores (mounted bullfighters)
Whatever your views on the tradition, the architecture and museum are genuinely interesting. Full details on the Plaza de Toros de Ronda official website.
3. Paseo de Ernest Hemingway and the Balcón del Coño
Balcón del Coño, Ronda
A cliff-edge promenade named after the writer who loved Ronda. It runs from the bullring to the edge of the gorge and includes the famous Balcón del Coño — yes, the name is crude Spanish slang for what people tend to shout when they first look over the railing. The balconies jut straight out over the cliffside and the views down into El Tajo are genuinely vertigo-inducing. They feel sturdier than they look.
4. La Casa del Rey Moro (Moorish Palace)
La Casa del Rey Moro, Ronda
A 14th-century mansion on the old-town side of the gorge. The house itself is closed to visitors, but the gardens are open and — more importantly — you can descend the Mina de Agua (Water Mine), a steep 200-step staircase cut into the rock by Moorish engineers to reach the river. It’s cool, slippery and a little claustrophobic, but it’s one of the most atmospheric spots in Ronda. Legend has it the palace was once home to the Moorish king Almotamid, who reputedly drank wine from the skulls of his enemies. Entry: €10.
5. Jardines de Cuenca
Jardines de Cuenca, Ronda
A terraced garden on the gorge wall that gives you a lateral view of Puente Nuevo you won’t get anywhere else. Quieter than the main viewpoints and often completely empty in the mornings. Free entry.
6. The Old Moorish Quarter (La Ciudad)
La Ciudad, Ronda’s old town
Cross the Puente Nuevo into La Ciudad and you’re in the original Moorish town. The main street, Calle Armiñán, curls past noble mansions, several still inhabited by Ronda’s titled families. Don’t miss:
- Plaza Duquesa de Parcent — arguably the prettiest square in town, home to the Santa María la Mayor church (built on the site of the old mosque and combining Renaissance and Gothic styles over nearly 200 years of construction) and the arched city hall.
- Baños Árabes — the 10th–11th century Arab baths, among the best-preserved in Spain. The star-shaped ceiling vents directly inspired those at the Alhambra of Granada. Entry: €4.50.

7. Lunch: Where to Eat in Ronda
Las Maravillas tapas bar, Ronda
Ronda’s food is mountain Andalusian — hearty, meat-heavy and generous. Local specialities worth ordering:
- Rabo de toro (braised oxtail) — the signature dish
- Jabalí (wild boar stew)
- Perdiz en escabeche (marinated partridge)
- Jamón de Ronda and local goat cheeses
Our full guide to restaurants and tapas in Ronda covers more, but three places we send clients to regularly:
- Casa Don Miguel — classic, gorge-view terrace next to Puente Nuevo
- Restaurante Macías — a short walk from the bullring, proper home cooking
- Las Maravillas — the best tapas on Calle La Bola (officially Carrera Espinel), always packed with locals
8. Ronda Wine
Ronda wine
Ronda is one of Spain’s most exciting emerging wine regions, with more than 20 bodegas producing high-altitude reds and whites in the DO Sierras de Málaga. A few rules of thumb if you’re adding a winery to your day trip:
- Do your research — start with our list of the best wineries in Ronda.
- Visit the Ronda Wine Information Centre — located in one of the most beautiful houses in the Old Town, it’s the best place to get context before you taste.
- Stick to two bodegas maximum — the drives between them are slow and tasting fatigue is real.
- Standouts worth visiting: Descalzos Viejos, Bodega García Hidalgo, Joaquín Fernández.
- Go with a guide — the vineyards are hard to reach without a car, and you want to be able to actually drink. We pick you up, drive you between bodegas, and get you back safely.
Best Viewpoints in Ronda (for Photos)
Four spots, in the order we recommend them:
- Mirador de Aldehuela — the classic postcard shot of Puente Nuevo from the north
- Jardines de Cuenca — the lateral gorge view
- Path below the bridge — head-on with the waterfall and river underneath
- Balcón del Coño / Paseo de Hemingway — straight-down view of El Tajo
Light is best in the late afternoon on the Mirador de Aldehuela side and in the morning from Jardines de Cuenca.
When to Visit Ronda
Best months: April, May, September and October. Warm, clear skies, manageable crowds.
Avoid if you can: mid-July through August — temperatures regularly hit 38–40°C and coach parties are at their heaviest.
Market day: Sunday, at the Recinto Ferial. More local than touristy, but a good atmosphere.
One to plan around: the Feria de Pedro Romero in the first week of September — spectacular if you want the full Ronda-in-its-element experience, but accommodation sells out months ahead.
Shopping in Ronda
The main shopping street is known as Calle La Bola (officially Carrera Espinel). It runs through the new town from Plaza del Socorro and is where you’ll find clothing boutiques, jewellery, leather goods, souvenir shops and a steady stream of tapas bars. For ceramics, wine and local produce, head into the old town instead — the shops are smaller but the quality is higher.
One quick note: Ronda is not spelled “Rhonda,” despite what the Beach Boys song suggests.

Many visitors add a stop in a white village such as Setenil de las Bodegas or Zahara de la Sierra on the way.
Is a day trip to Ronda worth it?
Absolutely. A day trip to Ronda offers a perfect blend of dramatic scenery, 2,000 years of history, and proper Andalusian food in a compact, walkable old town. Most of our guests tell us it’s the highlight of their week on the Costa del Sol.
Why is Ronda so famous?

Is Ronda too touristy?
Ronda is busy, especially between 11:00 and 15:00 when the coach tours arrive. Visit early (before 10:00) or late (after 16:00), and the town empties out considerably. Stay overnight and you’ll have it almost to yourself after sunset.
What day is market day in Ronda?
